City: Santa Rosa Category: 10.00

Time Compare: 14:00:00   Time Superior: 11:00:00
Road Info: Out N Back   Road Condition: Good
Comments: Remote and a private area. Cruel and certainly the hardest climb around or perhaps anywhere. There is no break from sustained 20+% climbing on bad road conditions for 3/4 a mile. Can you get to the top/gravel section with out getting off your bike more than twice!!!!

Ride: Summit Rd - From the intersection with Park Rd ( Take a right on Old Monte Rio Rd and thena a right on Park to find it), to the gravel at the top, you will know it is the top!

Comments: Hard to find, yet a surprise and reward when you do. This climb starts out steep then lessens a bit, then steeper still, then lessens a bit. Then KA-BOOM you are hit with 32% grade for about 75 meters!!! Remaining seated is not an option as your front wheel won't stay down. Dismounting is not an option as most of us would fall over or speed backwards down the hill. It is so steep that even switch backs are dangerous as your uphill pedal will hit the pave' each stroke if you are not very careful. Straight up you go fighting the bike though whole way. It finishes on a 5-6% incline for about 300 meters. This climb tops out at approx. 540' elevation.

Comments: Remote but a beautiful ride out to it through Armstrong Woods. Not the greatest ride due to single lane traffic and several incidents each year with bikers and cars. The steep section is in excess of 22% grade! Very hot and exposed so bring a lot of water in on a hot day! Tops out at approx. 1370' elevation.

Ride: Sugarloaf State park / microwave towers - Warning #1:!!! Not reccomended to do this climb in the heat of the summer day!! If you attempt this climb in the heat of the summer, bring a lot of water as it is very , very hot and open on the steep slopes. Rangers in this park pull people from this mountain suffering from heat issues all the time during the summer months. WARNING #2:!!! We reccomend this route with cyclocross or size 25 tires due to very bad gravel and broken road conditions most all the way up. This can be done with size 23 tires but it is only for the more adventurous (read foolish).Take the gravel road on the left right past the ranger station up to your first "Y" in the road and go right up to the green gate. The climb starts at this gate and ends at the Microwave/radio towers at the top.

Multiple steep sections on terrible road conditions all on a hot and exposed route make this one of the hardest undertakings around. About the only thing keeping this climb for being rated as a 10 for difficulty is the occasional reprive in steep sections. This climb tops out at approx. 2530' elevation.

Comments: Exposed and somewhat remote, this is another must do for all local riders. There is a double summit with a steep, half mile descent between them. Take it carefully on this middle descent as the road has recently been re-cut due to landslides from all the geothermic activity in the region! Tops out at approx. 2700' elevation.
